Lunging is more than just letting your horse run laps on a long line. You give your horse a nice exercise, among other things, but lunging has more purposes. For lunging you have various tools that you will find at MHS Equestrian.
The purpose of lunging
While lunging, it is good to keep your horse's attention. So don't let him run the same laps endlessly, but calmly ask for different transitions and also change direction occasionally. When your horse walks relaxed with its head down and the inner ear has turned towards you, you know that it is having a good time and is listening to your instructions.
You can also use the lunge to get your horse used to new things, such as wearing a saddle or bridle or taking an obstacle. In the latter case, make sure that the lunge line does not stay behind the uprights.
Tools for Lunging
The lunge line is the most important aid for lunging your horse. In our webshop you will find various soft lunging lines with a snap hook that you can easily attach to the halter of your horse. Depending on the size of your horse you will find lunge lines in different lengths with us. The loop at the end of the lunging line prevents the line from shooting easily out of your hands while lunging.
If you use a double lunging line, you need a lunging girth alongside the lunging lines, which you then use to get the lines through. The lunge girths in our range are softly padded with a filled neoprene or a soft, woolen underlay.
The double lunge lines are made of soft material and often have a narrow nylon cord at the ends. As a result, the line simply slides through the rings of the longeersingel, making the effect very smooth. The advantage of a double lunge is that you can act on your horse more directly. Your horse runs between two lines and with that the control is optimal.
There are several lunging aids that ensure that your horse can relax its back well while lunging. The lunging aid also stimulates a good posture of your horse. At MHS Equestrian you will find lunging aids from various famous brands, including Harry’s Horse and our own quality brand MHS.
