Choose the right girth for your horse
A girth ensures that your horse's saddle stays properly in place. There are several different fits and it is important to choose the right one that fits your horse perfectly.
If you are looking for an affordable girth and you don't want to spend much time on maintenance, then a neoprene girth is a good choice. Neoprene is a soft and flexible material and is good for your horse. The girth is easy to clean and can even be put in the washing machine.
A leather girth needs more maintenance, but because leather is a natural material, it breathes better than a synthetic girth such as nylon or neoprene. Leather girths last long and are the most comfortable for your horse. Always maintain it properly with a leather care product.
Types of girths
Basically, there are two types of girths: long and short girths. What you will need depends on the length of the straps on your saddle.
The girth length you require is measured with a tape measure from point to point around the belly. It is important to fit the girth properly to prevent any eventual chaffing.
An anatomically shaped girth, shaped in a half moon, ensures a more stable position for the girth and prevents the saddle from sliding forward.
Does your horse have a sensitive skin? Then a fur girth may be a good option. A lambskin girth is also suitable. The wool is very soft for your horse's skin and ensures good ventilation.
You can choose from girths with or without elastic. An elastic girth is easy to put on. Make sure that the girth is not fitted too tightly. This can lead to saddle coercion.
