Mullen Mouth
A mullen mouth is an unjointed bit that puts more pressure on the tongue and less on the layers. An unbroken bit therefore has no pivot points and consists of one piece.

At MHS Equestrian you will find different types of bite bits. They are single-broken, double-broken or unbroken. An unbroken bit provides more pressure on the tongue and less on the layers; the soft clearing between the molars and incisors of your shetland or mini-horse.
An unbroken bit has no pivot points, but consists of one whole. It can be straight or have an arc shape. If the bit has an arc shape, it follows the tongue of your shetlander.
In our assortment you will find various unbroken bits. The clamping snaffle, for example, is available with a mouthpiece made of stainless steel or copper. Copper has the pleasant feature that it tastes somewhat sweet. Your horse likes this and will therefore accept the bit more easily. The unbroken bit cannot pierce the palate of your miniature horse or shetland and has a nice stable location in the horse's mouth.
Does your shetlander tolerate stainless steel or copper less well? Then one of our unbroken bits made of leather or nylon is a good choice.
How does a bar bit work?
A bar bit works differently than an unbroken bit bit. Bar bits make use of leverage and are often used as a men bit, among other things. A rod bit, just like an unbroken bit, consists of an unbroken mouthpiece. In addition, the rod bit has a curb chain and two trees or scissors that can differ in length and shape. These provide leverage. This means you don't have to pull the reins so hard.
The rod has an indirect effect. When you operate the reins of a rod, the scissors first move backwards. Your horse will feel pressure in different places: the headpiece of the bridle, against the chin via the curb chain and then in the mouth. A rod is stricter than a bit bit and must always be applied with care and attention.
