Both salmon oil and flaxseed oil are rich in essential fatty acids. These are fatty acids that the body cannot make itself, while the body does need them to function normally. The big difference between salmon oil and linseed oil is in the types of omega 3 fatty acids. Flaxseed oil is particularly rich in 1 type of omega-3 fatty acid (ALA), while salmon oil is also rich in EPA and DHA in addition to ALA.

This ALA is most present in vegetable oil, while EPA and DHA are mainly found in animal oil. ALA fatty acids must first be converted by the horse to EPA and DHA in order to be used in the body. However, this process is quite inefficient, resulting in only 5-10% conversion. The animal EPA and DHA omega-3 fatty acids can be used directly by the horse, so that the omega-3 fatty acids that are given via salmon oil are used much more efficiently.

Feeding advice
Horse:
High: 60 ml per animal per day.
Maintenance: 30 ml per animal per day.

Pony:
High: 40 ml per animal per day.
Maintenance: 20 ml per animal per day.
